SUV Accident in NC

Four members of a South Carolina family died Saturday night when their sports utility vehicle ran off Interstate-95 in Nash County and overturned.

A sole member of the family, a 90-year-old woman, survived the wreck but is in critical condition in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The family was headed southbound on the highway just before 6 p.m. Saturday when the car ran off the road into the wooded center median and struck two pine trees, said Sgt. E.D. Lemons of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The 2004 Saturn Vue flipped and came to rest on the driver's side.

The single-vehicle accident occurred near Rocky Mount, about 70 miles east of Raleigh.

Killed in the crash were the driver Sylvester Pernell, 30, and the backseat passengers, Jamal Pernell, 28, Kimberley Penell, 21, and Georgia Pernell, 55. All were from Dillon, S.C., a city near the North Carolina border near Lumberton.

The elderly woman who survived the crash, Annie Mae Brown, 90, was in the front passenger seat.

Both Brown and Sylvester Pernell were wearing seat belts, Lemons said. The others killed in the crash were not.

Troopers don't know what caused the accident, and haven't been able to locate any witnesses, Lemons said.
