Horseback Riding Car Accident in Davidson County, NC

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. - A man who narrowly avoided being hit by a truck while on horseback said his nephew and a 9-year-old boy were crossing the road when the truck collided with them.

"When he hit the horses, I heard the bang and I turned around and I see Eric, my nephew, flying in the air," said Gary Stanley, who was one of four people horseback riding along Cunningham Rd. in Davidson County on Sunday evening. "I see the little fellow fly off into the ditch. A horse landed there. The other horse landed on the other side of the ditch."

Stanley said he had already crossed the road when the accident occurred.

Eric Turner, 27, and his girlfriend's son, 9-year-old Sebastian Swanson, were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical condition. Swanson was upgraded to serious condition Monday.

The two horses were immediately killed.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said Ellis Hughes, the man driving the truck, was not at fault and will not be charged.

Stanley believes otherwise. "I think he had plenty of time to stop his vehicle," he said.

"It was right at dusk. It was getting dark, but I mean, they knew it," said Turner's friend Jeffrey Huffman. "They were at their driveway coming home."

According to family and close friends, Turner is suffering from a head injury, internal bleeding, cracked ribs and a collapsed lung. Swanson has a broken pelvis, broken collarbone and crushed ankle.
