HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A woman and a friend of her grandson who were on their way home from church Sunday morning were killed in a crash involving a North Carolina state trooper.<;p>

Trooper J.D. Goodnight was traveling southbound on Business 85 at about 11:45 a.m. when he attempted to turn around to follow a blue blue Buick Skylark headed northbound.

He collided with a Honda Accord at the intersection of River Road and Business 85, killing the driver, 56-year-old Sandy Allmond, of Thomasville. A friend of Allmond's 11-year-old grandson, Taylor Strange, 11, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Also injured were Strange's brother, 9-year-old Steven Strange and Allmond's grandson, Ellijah Allmond. Both were expected to recover from their injuries.

A witness, Louise Jackson, said she heard what sounded like an explosion and came out so see what happened.

"This is the worst accident we've ever seen on this corner because there was no doubt that I've never seen a car with the whole front of it gone," Jackson said.

Trooper Greg Ingram said Goodnight had turned on his blue lights, but hadn't started chasing the vehicle when the crash happened. Ingram said investigators were trying to determine how fast the vehicles were traveling.

Goodnight was taken to a local hospital and was later treated and released. Troopers said Monday he has been placed on paid injury leave.
