Ayden Car Accident
Four people were hospitalized Monday morning after two cars struck head-on just north of Ayden on Old N.C. 11, according to the Ayden Police Department.
The accident happened less than a mile north of Ayden at 7:50 a.m., said Ayden senior officer Gretta Darden.
A Mitsubishi Galant driven by Naomi Ellis, age unavailable, of Winterville, was traveling north on the highway when it ran off the right side of the road, Darden said. When Ellis pulled the vehicle back on the road, it crossed the center line and struck a Honda Odyssey driven by Tereasa Gilland, age unavailable, of Ayden, Darden said. Gilland's 4-year-old daughter also was in the car.
Rescue crews extricated Ellis and her passenger, Roshonda Dunbar, from the Galant. All four people were transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Dunbar was in serious condition Monday night, according to a hospital spokesman. Ellis was listed in fair condition and Gilland was treated and released. Police did not release the name of Gilland's daughter so hospital officials could not check on her condition. Darden said EastCare emergency transport helicopters were called to the scene but weren't used for transport.
Darden said an investigation of the accident in continuing.
