Asheville Car Accident

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A 52-year-old North Carolina man was killed when his car slid down an embankment during a winter storm that dumped up to two feet of snow in western portions of the state.

The state Highway Patrol said Joseph Anthony Pipitone of Waynesville died Friday when he was ejected from his car after it slid off a private road and went down the embankment.

Snowfall ended in western North Carolina on Sunday, but the state's two utilities were still reporting power outages.

Progress Energy spokesman Drew Elliot said approximately 37,000 customers were without power in the Asheville area. He said many of those customers could have their power restored by Monday.

Duke Energy reported on its Web site Sunday night that fewer than 4,000 of its customers were without power.
